According to the L.A. County’s coroner office, Anton Yelchin died on Sunday, June 19th within a minute of his freak car accident. Chief Coroner Ed Winter says Yelchin died of blunt traumatic asphyxia caused by not putting the car in park.
The Star Trek actor passed away at age 27, after his vehicle fatally pinned him. He was found pressed between his security fence and brick mailbox early Sunday morning after the car rolled down his steep L.A driveway. Police state that there are no suspicions of foul play and that his death appears to be a tragic accident at this time.
Yelchin was heading out to meet friends for a rehearsal, but they grew worried after he didn’t arrive. They drove to his house around 1:00 am where they discovered his body. His vehicle, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was part of a massive recall. 1.1 million Jeep Grand Cherokees are in recall because the electronic gearshift makes it hard to shift the car into park.
On June 20 Jeep released a statement offering their condolences, but stated it is too early to assume that the company’s vehicle is at fault. A representative for Jeep shared that FCA US extends their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Anton Yelchin. He shared that they will conduct a thorough investigation of this tragic incident.
Many of Yelchin’s famous friends have posted to social media since his tragic passing in order to honor his memory. Yelchin’s Star Trek co-star Zoe Saldana writes that she is devastated by her friend’s loss. She continued by saying we are all mourning his passing and celebrating the beautiful soul that he was.
Outside of his Star Trek role, Yelchin is known for acting in movies such as Charlie Bartlett and Like Crazy. Yelchin stars alongside Justin Timberlake in Alpha Dog, and appears posthumously in Star Trek Beyond, scheduled to release in July.
