A young man who plays for the for the Grand Rapids Drive is in the hospital after collapsing during a game on Saturday, March 25. Zeke Upshaw fell to the floor with just 50 seconds remaining in the weekend contest. He was taken off the court via stretcher and transported to Spectrum Health Hospital.
Upshaw was in the game on defense when he collapsed. Upshaw is just 26 years old and in his second season playing for the Drive.
The team has not given an update on Upshaw’s condition as of Sunday morning. However, they did say they would provide updates on the 26-year-old’s status as those updates become available.
Upshaw scored 11 points in Saturday’s game. He has averaged a career-high 8.5 points per game in 41 games this season.
The second-year player is originally from Chicago, Illinois. He began his college career at Illinois State. Upshaw played there for three seasons before transferring to Hofstra for his senior season.

He was drafted out of college and signed with the Drive as a free agent. The Grand Rapids Drive is a member of the National Basketball Association’s G League. The G League serves as a developmental league for NBA teams. With that being so, Grand Rapids is an affiliate of the Detroit Pistons.
Saturday’s game, a 101-99 win over the Long Island Nets, marked the regular season finale for the Drive. With the win, they clinched a berth in the NBA G League playoffs.
At this time, it is unknown whether or not Upshaw would be able to return for the Drive’s postseason games. However, the team has 29 wins and 21 losses this season.
Also, they were able to win six consecutive games to finish the regular season and finish with the second-best record in the G League Eastern Conference. Grand Rapids next plays on Wednesday, March 28. They will take on Toronto Raptors affiliate Raptors 905.
Two days after collapsing on the court before the end of the game, Zeke Upshaw has passed away. At the time of his death, he was 26-years old. Malcolm Turner, the president of the G league says that the entire league is mourning the death of Upshaw.
