Lil Nas X currently has the longest-running No. 1 single ever on Billboard Hot 100 Chart. “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, has been able to maintain it’s position at number 1 for seventeen weeks in a row. The former record-holders “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber, from 2017, and “One Sweet Day” by Carey and Boyz II Men in 1995-96.
To congratulate the country rapper, Mariah Carey posted an edited photo of the two. In the picture, she is passing a torch to Lil Nas X. Initially, “Old Town Road’ went viral on the app TikTok, where users are able to create and share video clips. After Billboard chose to pull the song from the country charts, it was able to garner even more traction.
Lil Nas X Makes History With “Old Town Road”
In a statement from Billboard to Rolling Stone, they were able to determine that ‘Old Town Road’ did not merit inclusion on Billboard’s country charts. According to those at Billboard, they take into consideration many factors when determining the genre of a song. The main factor is musical composition. Though “Old Town Road” did incorporate country references such as cowboy imagery, there were not enough elements of country music to consider it a country song. Many people were accusing Billboard of being racist.
However, even with all of the uproar, there was plenty of support for the song. Billy Ray Cyrus was very supportive and was joyous about jumping on the remix. There is also a remix to the remix featuring hip-hop artists Young Thug and Mason Ramsey. Also, another remix with RM, of the astronomically successful K-pop band BTS.
Not only did Carey show Lil Nas X love on her post, but she also paid homage to Boys II Men and their hit single on her Instagram post.
