The 62nd Grammy Awards nominations are now ready, and Lizzo is making headlines for appearing in five of the top categories. However, some critics don’t believe she has a chance.
Lizzo, who is a singer, songwriter, flutist, and rapper, has nominations in five of the top categories for the night. Her nominations include Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best R&B Performance. She’s not the only one who will be serving us major face and attitude that night.
Lil Nas X was able to receive nominations for Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Record of the Year for his debut album, 7. The hit single, “Old Town Road,” is up against songs by artists such as Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Bon Iver, Swae Lee, H.E.R., and Ariana Grande. All of these artists are fierce competition against each other.

However, the window for eligibility for award nominations this year was for projects with releases from Oct. 1, 2018, and Aug. 31, 2019. An anonymous nominating committee is in charge of determining the Grammy Award nominations. They tally votes from Recording Academy members. Of course, there are rumors always swirling as to what the contributing factors are behind the nominating committee’s decisions. However, there is little known about the process or the members of the group.
Also, this will be Deborah Dugan’s first year as president as well as CEO of the Recording Academy. The Recording Academy is the parent organization of the Grammy Awards. Dugan was available to introduce the nominations announcement on Wednesday. Also available were journalist Gayle King, Bebe Rexha, producer Harvey Mason Jr., and Alicia Keys. Keys was able to use the airtime to announce her latest record, Time Machine.
The Grammys will air on CBS Jan. 26, 2020.
